Wangkatja Tjungula Country
The Nyalpa Pirniku claim group’s native title rights and interests were recognised when the Federal Court handed down its determination on 31 October 2023. The determined area spans more than 30,000 kilometres across the northern Goldfields and is part of the Western Desert Cultural Bloc (WDCB). Generally, the Western Desert people associated with the south-western part of the Western Desert refer to themselves as Wangkayi which is also the name of their language. In Wangkayi, Nyalpa Pirniku refers to the old people or elders in the community. The name was chosen by the Nyalpa Pirniku Applicants in recognition of their elders.
Wangkatja Tjungula Aboriginal Corporation (ICN 9951) (WTAC) holds the native title in the Determination Area as agent for the native title holders. WTAC was registered on 3 May 2023 with the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations.
Trust Advisory Committee (TAC)
The initial Trust Advisory Committee (TAC) will consist of all the members of the Selection Committee who appointed the Trustee. This interim TAC will be replaced at the first community meeting of the Wangkatja Tjunkula People Charitable Trust, during which an election for the TAC will be held.
The TAC’s role is to give advice and suggestions to the Trustee about managing the Trust. This includes how to use, save or distribute the funds to the Beneficiaries. The TAC advises on any other specific issues mentioned in the Deed that require their input or decisions.
Engaging with TAC
The TAC typically meets six times a year. If you would like something raised on the agenda, you can reach out to any of the TAC members individually or complete the Trust Feedback Form via the Custodian Community app on your phone.
